absence

what is absence
in this hyper connected society
is it the lack of physical presence
or twenty minutes since
your last tweet

how do you miss someone
whose facebook feed
scrolls by in green on black
matrix code

blonde, brunette, redhead

how can I learn to miss you
when we text each other
good night
every day

where does yearning come from
when our minds are engaged in
intellectual intercourse
for every waking moment

how can hearts grow fonder
if the physical distance between us
is squeezed by webcams
and snapchat

how is this supposed to work
in this modern world
maybe it doesn’t
maybe it never has
maybe it’s always been this way

could I be complaining about
late nights spent gabbing away
on the telephone

or maybe a heartfelt communique
stop
that comes to you via telegraph
stop
hand delivered to you
stop
by a gentleman in a bellboy cap
stop

maybe the pony express was too fast
hand written letters taking days not months
they brought us so close together
I can’t even breathe any more!

no matter the era
i miss you
letters are touching punctuations to a day
a text reminds me youre thinking of me right then
a picture shares your faraway world
our minds touch each other in so many intimate ways
it makes the nights more bearable
it makes the days less gloomy
the need of you
doesnt recede because of you said hi
all of the things that facilitate our mental intercourse
dont diminish the comfort of your presence
